In the rearview mirror Epilogue Part II

So, now I am home from Webelos Weekend.  Trading Post is cleaned up, and ready to set up for Pow Wow when I go back on Friday.  Goetz was cleaned out, ready for me to take a bed Friday and Saturday nights.  Like I never have left.  Will this ever stop?

Technically, I am done being on staff.  I volunteered for Pow Wow, and as I will be going to Brandon's ward on Sunday for Rachel's blessing, that actually makes it somewhat convenient.  But I did want to write a little more on my time on Staff this past year.

I first want to express gratitude to Brandon and Dave, both of whom took a chance on a first year staffer to take a fairly significant role by running the Trading Post.  That was a pretty big job, bigger than I realized. I missed more than a few meals just trying to get everything done that needed doing.  I was only able to get everything done because of Roger.

Roger stood in at the last minute, simply because he was available.  He has dedicated a lot to the Council and they asked him if he could assist in the store, and he willingly did that.  He worked the mornings so that I could have "time off"  meaning time to do the money, and other jobs that needed doing.  Roger was concerned that I was spending so much time in the store, but there was no way that I could have been able to accomplish what I did without him.  I built a relationship with Roger over the summer, learning a lot about the organization of the council and the tribe from him.  Thank you Roger.

It was the last summer for Dee Dee and Kathy in the Kitchen.  Dee  Dee told me that no one is irreplaceable, and she was correct, but being replaced means change, significant change, and the vast majority of campers and staff don't remember a time without Dee Dee in the Dining Hall.  Of course, I remember before Dee Dee was cooking, and the old Dining Hall (now the Training Center)

In fact, next year will be a season of change.  A new Program Director.  A new Mic-O-Say Director.  I have heard rumors that others won't be returning.  The Ranger has started a countdown, and while he has two years to go, that clock is definitely ticking, not that John will show any of that.  One thing that I have heard said the past two years is that the end of each season is the last time that that staff will be together.  There is always some change, and next year I suspect a lot of change.

Underlying much of that change is the likelihood that next year girls will be inducted into the tribe.  While many may hope it doesn't happen, or pretend it won't happen, I personally don't see how it doesn't.  Girls in the tribe, women on the Tribal Council.  They are unknowns.  Discussions have been going on for over a year, and my guess is plans will be in place before the start of the season.

Full disclosure, I am not involved in any official discussion on the subject, and am offering only MY opinion on what I think will happen.  I worry that so many are afraid of that great unknown.  It is likely not the abyss that some think it will be.  So long as BSA stands for the principles of Duty to God, Country, and the Scout Law, you can "scout" me in.  When they don't I won't.

I was a proud member of the 2019 Camp Geiger Staff, and I feel that I lived up to that title.  If God wills it I will be part of the 2020 Camp Geiger Staff as well.

May God go with all members of the Staff as they go their own ways.  May they follow paths of righteousness always.  They will be blessed for doing so.

Thanks to the Campers that made 2019 such a success.  Be careful on your trails in life.  And as always....
