Today concluded the semi-annual conference for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). For those that are not familiar, every six months the leaders of the church speak to members gathered in Salt Lake City and all over the world. To members of the LDS church, the President of the church is the Lord's prophet on earth. By prophet, I mean exactly as what one would think from biblical times. Think Moses, Elijah, Daniel, Peter. We believe that he holds the keys to administer the church, including all ordinances. Authority is delegated to local leaders to officiate on the local level, which is further delegated to individual men who have been called and found worthy to officiate in various offices. The church also has apostles, just as the ancient church did (Ephesians 4:11-13) I won't go into the full organization of the church here, but would be glad to if asked.
During the conference on Sunday morning, the first three speakers spoke of sustaining, or supporting the prophet of God. They went into detail describing what that means to the individual member, as well as to the church body in general. I should note that while the assignments to speak are assigned by the prophet, as well as the length of time to speak, the topic is not. The intent is that the speaker should through prayer, and much consideration determine the subject of their speech. That is why it was so odd to hear three in a row speak on the same subject. So on facebook, I wrote:
Three speakers, all affirming the need to sustain the prophet, and the prophetic office. Hmmm. Almost makes me feel something is coming.
I refuse to speculate on the what, or when, let alone why. Our place is to be obedient, to listen to the still small voice, and to know that God is. I certainly would not presume to speak knowingly about what God has planned, or His timetable for that plan. All I intended was to express a feeling that we were being reminded that we sustained the Prophet of God, and that includes accepting the will of the Lord, no matter what.
As a note to the one or two that have read previous posts, I want to let you know that my testimony of Christ is solid as always. I know that the Lord has all power. My weakness is in my feelings about my ability to follow, not whether or not the teachings are true, they are. I have always struggled seeing people change, and do, and me not being able to shift to the next gear.
