Watch and Pray
The Creator was dead.
And so He died on the cross. Willingly surrendering His life, that we may live. None could have killed Him. It had to be voluntary. He chose to do the will of his Father, and to drink of that bitter cup. The Romans allowed his disciples to take him away, to be buried in a borrowed tomb. They had to hurry, as the Sabbath was approaching. Imagine the anguish they felt. No doubt they fought through tears to wrap him and to carry him to the tomb. His mother and others wailing, not understanding. John himself not understanding.
They did not understand what happened. He was Messiah. The King. The One who lived a life without sin. He died a criminal. All of the teachings, even when He told them that He had to die and would be resurrected were beyond their grasp. It wasn't beyond the grasp of the Priests though. The High Priest fully understood what Christ meant when He said that he would destroy this temple and in three days build it back. So he asked Pilate for a seal on the tomb, and a watch.
The disciples no doubt huddled together in Jerusalem. Peter in anguish that he so easily denied his Master. The others talking about the trial, probably hearing it from John. All the while, His mother and those women closest to Him were probably weeping in the background.
No doubt they felt hopeless.
The temple curtain was rent in twain. Earthquakes, storms, tempests. Earth mourned the death of its creator.
On the other side of the world, darkness such that no light could shine. Earthquakes, fires, tidal waves, whole cities destroyed. Some by fire, some by the sea. Others were swallowed by the earth, and others burned. Millions died. Only the most righteous were preserved.
The Creator was dead.
Little did they know that in two days the greatest enemy of all, death, would be completely, and utterly defeated. Men would live again. Those who follow Him and keep His commandments will be freed from the spiritual death as well, no longer separated from the Father and the Son.
Watch and pray. We prepare to celebrate and behold anew the greatest miracle since the creation.
