Within each of us.

Doug Stewart is a master songwriter.  He wrote the lyrics for Saturday's Warrior, Star Child, and the magnificent Threads of Glory Pageant.  And on and on.  I wanted to talk about Star Child, and I will be over the next little while highlighting a few songs.  I know.  Boring to you, maybe.  Not to me, and with so few reading anymore, I can write for myself.  But maybe, someone will read the words, not mine, the lyrics, and be touched by them.

If you are saying "what is Star Child?"  Well, it is an LDS musical from the 70's, a continuation for a couple of characters from Saturday's Warrior.  The main characters are:

Chuck, the star. son of a good active LDS family that has lost his way, caught up in the perils, oh wait, that is a different song. Is Marie's boyfriend through high school.  He rebels, and then towards the end, repents, feeling he needs to do something, be becomes a missionary, sent to find ...
Larry, Chuck's best friend in the pre-earth life, has a last minute change to be born on the other side of the world. (I didn't say the doctrine was correct, but I do find it interesting to think on)
Marie, the heroine, Chuck's girlfriend that goes to BYU because things were getting too close with Chuck,
Wally, from Saturday's Warrior, returned missionary, trying to win Marie's heart.
Harold, Wally's missionary companion, becomes involved with Mitzy
Betty Lou, friend to Marie, and sometimes counselor.  Has a very interesting and at times antagonistic relationship with Wally. (not romantic, at least from one side)
Mitzy, Extremely shy, very timid, blossoms throughout due, in part to the attentiveness of Harold.

The first song I want to post is Within Me, a duet between Marie and Betty Lou.  They are discouraged by the fact that super shy Mitzy has gotten engaged. I know, it is not the same without the music, but read the words, and try to feel the message.  It is so uplifting it could be its own theme for Young Women. I tried to get the punctuation right, but was listening and writing.  Always the hard way with me.

Okay I’m nothing great, but still I’m me and that’s substantial,
I may not be all wise, but still I realize, I’ve got potential
So what if I’m I alone, that doesn’t mean I can’t be happy,
Although I’ll conceal, deep down the pain I feel, who say’s, I’m lonely?
I fret and I forget just who I am and what I’m after
Much like a cupie doll, so easily I fall and break like plaster
And so again I ask, “Dear Father, do I really matter?”
He bends to pick me up, I am His daughter!

And with His Spirit oh so near, I see myself, the picture’s clear
As endless as the sands of time, I see my destiny, all that I can become
Just like the stars up in the sky, I am a multitude, a universe am I!
Within me, worlds without end, within me, power to ascend
To glory, if I am worthy, for within me there is light!
Within me a multitude shall arise!

The ebb and flow of time cannot contain a child’s laughter,
It echoes like a dream that ripples on a stream that goes forever
Speaking to my soul I hear a million children crying:
“Be faithful and be strong, your journey’s just begun, I am your offspring!”

And then I feel His Spirit near, I see myself, the picture’s clear
I am a miracle and more, I am the source, I am the shore
I am the stars up in the sky, I am a multitude, a universe am I!
Within me, worlds without end, within me, power to ascend,
To glory, if I am worthy, for within me there is life!

Within me a multitude shall arise!

Note the differences in the choruses.  The growing confidence that God does have a plan for us.  We are not finite with a beginning and an end.  If we just reach out. He will lift us up.

I know not many will read this, and those that do will wonder where the vitriol is.  No more of that, (except for PP, can't help it)  Feel free to cut and paste the lyrics,  Remember, Doug Stewart, Lots more to come.
