Ye have done it unto me

I really didn't want to write anything today, but for some reason feel very compelled to do so.  It is the eve of General Conference, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and the opportunity to hear Apostles, prophets, and other authorities of the church give us the words we need to hear.  I suspect that I will probably write about that, but this is much more personal.

Do not think for a moment, that I know a whole lot about Carl Whitcomb.  I had met him when his grandsons were in Scouts, and was impressed with his kindness in volunteering to help out.  Most of us say "Let me know if I can do anything." and then promptly go back to what we were doing.  He did not.  When a need was present, he was there.  He didn't ask that question, he offered his amazing talents to those in need.

Carl died last week.  His mortal probation finished.  Today, a funeral was held, he was eulogized, he was remembered.  I do not like funerals, but was so happy to be there today.  I hope that my small part was acceptable.  All of us stand in the shadow of that giant of a man.

His life touched so many.  Through his service with the fire department, his love of the outdoors, his care for his family, I could go on.  I know that he was, and will continue to be a rock for his daughters, and his wife.  Louise, one of his daughters, is a friend of mine, and I know that the strength she has shown in times of trial came from him.  She told me that he was the best man that she knew.  He was not perfect, none of us are, but I have no doubt that he will be found on the right hand of God.  That when he asks the Lord when did he help him, Christ will say that he had served those around him, and that by serving  them, he served God.

My last interaction with him was to do some back fill in his yard.  Quite a bit of dirt needed to be moved, and while he had done much, he reluctantly allowed us to help to move and spread the dirt.  He was frustrated that it was not something that he could do alone.  I was thrilled to help.

I have no doubt that he will continue to watch over his family, and that when he hears the gospel, he will accept it, and eagerly await the time to be sealed to his wife of 55 years.

No higher praise, Louise, can be given to a man.  Not by mortals, at least.  We wish the dead to "Rest in Peace".  I suspect that Carl is done resting, and will be actively engaged in good works where he is now.  He lives on.  His legacy on earth will ensure that his memory does as well.
