New Year's Eve. Good bye 2016
What a time to reflect. BaconFest 2016, it was so good to connect with family long not seen. I love all of them. Kathie, Lucy and Paul, and Leslie and Scott. Brandon and Jessie. and Paul! To be surrounded by family is the best thing to be. Way better than figuring out how to not be alone and yet being alone in Twin.
One week in retirement. Still trying to settle in, and figure things out.
I have a lot of work to do around the house, and that actually makes me happy.
What has the year wrought? The end of a 28 year career. That is a no brainer, and have written already about it.
How about a nation more divided than any time since the Civil War? I really do think it is that bad. People protesting the President Elect, and yet he is probably the most apolitical candidate to run since who knows when. What does the gay community have to fear from him? Absolutely nothing. For that matter, what do they, or any other special interest group have to fear from an originalist Supreme Court Nominee? Someone who brings no prejudice to the bench. Who adjudicates the law according to real human rights, not make believe ones like education, healthcare, food, housing, or a living. Rights such as life, liberty, and property. That was way more than what I wanted to write on the subject. Suffice to say that we are probably beyond a strictly constitutional fix. Luckily, over the last twenty years both parties have worked hard to create a near dictator position.
So many celebrities have died. Musicians, actors, amazing voices and talent. Ultimately, none are immune. And it will continue. So many have died without notice. Innocent children, Kids pretending to be adults, accidents, and more. I think right now of the line "and in despair, I bowed my head, there is no peace on earth I said, for hate is strong and mocks the song, of 'Peace on Earth, Good will towards men'". Wars and rumors of wars. I know that I have read that somewhere.
Personally, I had faced retirement, saw a possible reprieve, saw that shot down, and welcomed the end. A college graduation. New job for a son, Continued separation from family, until the end.
Singing in Stake Conference, directing the ward choir, singing in Come to Bethlehem. What a moment that was.
The opportunity to #LIGHTtheWORLD and hopefully to continue along that path. Finding ways to serve. Attending the temple, and feeling the presence of the Savior.
Happy New Year, Welcome 2017, Hopefully we can all see past our differences, and realize that we are all in this together. I certainly will try.
